  • Q: Can antifreeze alone be used in a HD engine?

    Pure antifreeze actually freezes at a higher temperature and transfers less heat from an engine than a 50% antifreeze/water solution. It’s recommended that antifreeze be mixed at a proper 50% proportion of both water and antifreeze.

  • Q: Antifreeze/coolant formulations come in so many different colors. Is there an industry standardization for AFC colors?

    Manufacturers use different color dyes for different types of antifreeze/coolants. The American Trucking Associations’ Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC), in its “Recommended Practice RP 351,” proposes: Conventional Low-Silicate (Green); Fully Formulated Ethylene Glycol (Purple/Pink); Fully Formulated Propylene Glycol (Blue); Organic Acid Technology (OAT) (Red).

  • Q: How does antifreeze/coolant (AFC) protect a cooling system and improve a heavy duty vehicle’s uptime?

    A: Antifreeze/Coolant (AFC) protects the heavy duty engine from heat by controlling critical metal temperatures. Quality AFC will provide effective inhibition of corrosion for all the cooling-system metals through a wide range of temperature extremes. If the temperature is too low, the air being sucked into the combustion chamber might be too cold and affect fuel combustion. If the engine gets too hot, it can lead to pre-ignition of the air-fuel mixture, causing unwanted noise, loss of torque and performance, and head-gasket failure.

  • Q: How does antifreeze/coolant (AFC) protect an engine from cavitation corrosion?

    A: While Quality AFC will provide effective inhibition of corrosion for most of the cooling system metals through a wide range of temperature extremes, high-heat-rejecting surfaces such as wet sleeve liners are high-heat flux areas where boiling can be generated. As bubbles form and collapse, they send a shock wave to the surface that can cause very localized damage, which appears as a circular pit on the surface of the metal. This damage can cause a leak resulting in a loss of the engine if it is not stopped or the part replaced in time. The corroded surface can generate products that are transported to other areas of the cooling system, leading to other serious problems including the over-heating and loss of an engine. If you want to run at optimum performance and protect ALL engine metals from corrosion, pitting and rusting, it is imperative a quality AFC, such as Prestone Command® Extended Life Coolant, is utilized at the appropriate change interval.

    A: It is available in three formulations: Prestone Command® Heavy Duty Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant (Red); Prestone Command Heavy Duty Extended Service Interval Antifreeze/Coolant (Purple); and Prestone Command Heavy Duty Nitrite Free Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant (Yellow).

  • Q: What differentiates Prestone Command® Heavy Duty Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant?

    A: The Extended Life formulation, which is denoted by its red color and labeling, provides 600,000-mile/12,000-hour CAT EC-1 protection for any diesel-powered heavy duty engine. Its patented formula protects aluminum and all other engine metals against temperature extremes, rust, corrosion, scale and water-pump failure.

  • Q: What differentiates Prestone Command® Heavy Duty Extended Service Antifreeze/Coolant?

    A: The Extended Service Interval formulation, which features purple coloring and labeling, is SCA pre-charged and provides advanced protection from freezing, overheating, cavitation erosion, corrosion, scale and foaming in any heavy duty engine with or without controlled-release filter technology that is used in normal to severe duty cycles and extreme temperature conditions.

  • Q: Are Prestone Command® Heavy Duty Antifreeze/Coolants available in 50/50 Prediluted formulations?

    A: Yes. All Prestone Command Heavy Duty AF/C is available in both concentrate and prediluted formulations.

  • Q: Can Prestone Command® Extended Life and Extended Service Antifreeze/Coolants be mixed?

    A: Yes, both are compatible with any other heavy duty antifreeze/coolant.

  • Q: Why should I use Extended Life antifreeze/coolants?

    A: Extended Life antifreeze/coolants are recommended by nearly all heavy duty engine OEMs to help protect the sophisticated coolant systems typical on modern-day heavy duty vehicles. Extended life antifreeze/coolants eliminate routine testing and help keep vehicles in operation longer, all of which help reduce operating costs and maximizes uptime.

  • Q: Besides CAT EC-1, what other product-performance specifications and requirements does Prestone Command® Extended Life Heavy Duty Antifreeze/Coolant meet or exceed?

    A:  Prestone Command® Extended Life Heavy Duty Antifreeze/Coolant meets or exceeds performance requirements of all major engine manufacturers, along with the following specifications: TMC RP-329, ASTM D-6210, ASTM D-4985, ASTM D-3306, SAE 1941.

    A: For optimum protection against freezing or boilover, a 50/50 mix of Prestone Command® Extended Service Heavy Duty Antifreeze/Coolant and tap water should be used. Concentration levels should not fall below 40% or exceed 65% by volume.

  • Q: What is the shelf life of Prestone Command® Antifreeze/Coolant?

    A: In its original sealed container, Prestone Command® Antifreeze/Coolants have a shelf life of many years. Even if the product has been opened but not diluted with water, it maintains a shelf life of many years.

  • Q: What Makes the "Patented" Prestone Command Technology different than other Antifreeze Coolants?

    A: The patented technologically advanced technology is based upon a concentrated blend of premium long-lasting inhibitors designed to provide up to 600,000 miles/12,000 hours* of protection against temperature extremes, rust, corrosion, scale and premature water pump failure. When used as directed, Prestone Command® Heavy Duty ELC may be added to the antifreeze/coolant of any heavy duty commercial or stationary engine. It provides a silicate, phosphate and borate-free technology for long-lasting inhibition and corrosion protection and protects aluminum and all other engine metals.

  • Q: Why Can 1-Million Mile AFC Change Interval Claims Be Harmful To Your Engine?

    Despite their eye-catching nature, recent claims of 1-million-mile AFC change intervals aren't based on any new science or coolant technology, they just imply that existing coolants now have the ability to offer as much as 67% more miles of engine and coolant-system protection. Therefore, operators of heavy duty vehicles shouldn't take at face value 1-million-mile claims that could end up doing nothing more than putting their engines at risk. They should also be aware that while heavy duty engines have become increasingly more sophisticated in recent years, most coolant technologies have remained the same since the days when a 200,000-mile change interval was considered groundbreaking. With all that said, heavy duty vehicle operators must first and foremost realize that reliable engine performance – no matter the number of miles that have been driven – depends on proper maintenance, which includes the use of patented Prestone Command® Extended Life Coolant. It's also important to maintain the correct coolant level by topping off regularly with a compatible coolant to ensure your engine remains at the correct temperature … and is fully protected!
